John Underwood II

Architect

John grew up near the Atlantic Ocean in Virginia Beach. After earning a BA in Economics in 1978 from Hampden-Sydney, he worked for a Commercial General Contracting firm for 11 years.

At 34 years old, John saw an opportunity to combine his knowledge of Construction with Design and entered Architecture School, graduating in 1995 from Hampton University.

After a two year Internship with Hanbury Architectural firm in Norfolk, Virginia, John joined Tidewater Hotels & Resorts as Vice President of New Construction and developed three Hotel projects.

In 2000, John started a private practice in Virginia Beach specializing in the Design-Build, before moving to the island of Kauai in 2004.

His unique experience in both architecture and building construction totals over 40 years and his Portfolio includes commercial, multi-family and residential projects.

John enjoys sailing, swimming and exploring the back country in Koke’e.

Patrick Caswell

Associate Designer

Patrick is from Cincinnati. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 2011 with a Bachelors in Architectural Engineering Technology.

Patrick moved to Hawaii in 2012 where he worked at an educational center for sustainable living, built aquaponic beds and was a vendor at the local Farmers Market. Patrick also designed Solar Photovoltaic Systems for the local utility cooperative and he also enjoyed working in Alaska at Kenai Fjords National Park in 2010.

In 2017 Patrick began working at Island Architecture as a designer. John and Patrick work together to create spaces that blend form and function for comfortable island living. Patrick is a Candidate for his Architectural Licensure with NCARB and is currently studying for the A.R.E.

Beyond Blueprints, Patrick is a surfer, photographer, snowboarder, hiker, gardener and father. Patrick finds inspiration from his travels and he finds peace with nature.
